Merged Municipality Marks 10 Years

Princeton, NJ

Princeton, NJ, is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the largest municipal restructuring in New Jersey in nearly a century, accomplished with CGR’s assistance. CGR worked closely over the course of a year with both the Princeton Township and Borough, delivering a consolidation plan that won the approval of both parties.

CGR’s role involved extensive budgetary review covering all operations; special (i.e., dedicated, self-liquidating) funds and debt; an evaluation of all municipal services; and governance / administrative functions. After the plan was endorsed with overwhelming voter approval in 2011, CGR helped manage the implementation in 2012, with the unified municipality launching in 2013.

This landmark merger generated $1.3 million in savings and a 4.5 percent reduction in municipal taxes in its first year, with ongoing savings for taxpayers.

This week, Mayor Mark Freda, Princeton Councilwoman Michelle Pirone Lambros and state Sen. Andrew Zwicker (D-16) will offer remarks about the benefits of consolidation at a municipal celebration.
