Local Government Efficiency Opportunities

Cattaraugus County Presentation

CGR’s Local Government Practice Lead Paul Bishop recently spoke with local elected officials in Little Valley, Cattaraugus County, on the state of local governments in rural areas and the opportunities for reorganization, especially for Towns and Villages. Bishop discussed the steps needed for municipal dissolutions and consolidations as well the grant opportunities to fund this type of study. CGR has been involved with dozens of municipal reorganization studies in all corners of New York State. Cattaraugus County has a population of 76,500 and 43 cities, towns and villages, which is one of the smallest ratios of residents to municipality in New York.

The state recently announced it is doubling available funding for efficiency efforts, from $4 million to $8 million. Planning grants of up to $100,000 and implementation grants of up to $1.25 million are available, with local matches required.
CGR can assist local governments with project design and grant applications.
